URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. Or we can also say that the URL full form is Uniform Resource Locator. The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) was developed by Tim Berners Lee in the year of 1994.

The URL is nothing in general life, but it is the most important part of the internet because it identifies the location or address of any website and its content on the internet.

In other words, we can say that the URL is an address of any website on the internet, by using the URL we can access the website and its data from the internet.

URL is a combination of characters that locate the data and resources on the internet. These characters may be a combination of dots(.), texts (a-z), numbers (0-9), and slash (/).

In real life, you have your own home and also have an address of your home. Same as, On the internet lots of things (data, images, videos) are available and it also has an address, this address is known as URL (Uniform Resource Locator). The URL is a part of the URI (Uniform Resource Identifier).

URL contains the following pieces of information they are as follows:-

  1. Internet Protocol
  2. A colon with two forward-slash (://)
  3. hostname or website name or domain name or IP-address
  4. A colon followed by the port-number
  5. Last file path

1) Internet Protocol:-

The internet protocols provide some rules to access the website or resources from the internet. Without a protocol, we can not access the data over the internet.

When we type the URL or web address in the browser address box and hit the enter button. We have to see the web page will open in the browser, and sometimes also see some errors like 404 page not found or This page isn’t working. This is performed by the help of internet protocol.

2) Hostname or Website/Domain Name or IP Address:-

The hostname or website/domain name is your business or website name on the internet. In the URL “https://facebook.com”, the “facebook.com” is the website or business name for the Facebook Company.

But IP address is the location or address of the server where the website or file is stored. Generally, we are not writing the IP address in the browser address box to visit the website.

The Domain name has been assign to point the IP address of the server, so this is the reason we are visiting the website using website name or domain name instead of IP address. If you want to visit the website using the IP address you can do that.

3) File Path or File Name:-

It describes the file name or pathname on the server. In the URL “http://factwifi.com/full-form/url-full-form.html“, the “full-form” is the pathname or folder name while “url-full-form.html” is the file name. In other words, we can say that the “url-full-form.html” file is stored in the folder name “full-form“.

Rules for URL:-

There are some rules, which help you to get more concept about the URL:

  • URLs must start with the protocol such as HTTP or https.
  • It is combinations of characters such as dots (.), slash(\), text (a-z), and numbers(0-9).
  • We can’t use the backslash (\) in the URL
  • We can user dash(-) and underscore (_) between the file or pathname such as URL-full-form.html. Where each word is separated by the dash.
  • The URL must contain the protocol, website name and file (optional) in a good manner.

Concept of URL:-

Generally, we type the URL in the browser address bar or address box to visit the Website or web pages. Sometime, we may see websites are open properly but some websites show errors such as “This site can’t be reached” or “404 pages not found”.

Generally when we type the URL in the address box and hit the enter button. A request is automatically generated from browser to website server with the help of protocol (HTTP). The server is a location, where the website files are stored on the internet.

And browser also receives the request form the Server as a server responds. Then the browser will display the website or webpages.

In case, we type the wrong website address and hit the enter button at that time, the browser also generates and receives the request form the server. But it will display the error.

Note:- In the error, the number 404 is error code, which identifies the particular error.

What is URI:-

The URI is an abbreviation of the word Uniform Resource Identifier, which locates the objects on the internet (world-wide-web). It is a combination of characters that allows accessing objects such as websites, images, videos, etc from the internet.

So we can say that it is an address of all objects on the www. The URI uses both file name, file address to access the website and its file from the internet.

The URI is classified into two types: Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and Uniform Resource Names (URNs).

The URL enables to access resources with the help of their address over the Internet. While URNs enable to access the objects (website, file, data) using its name also over the internet.
